Push & Pull 2027 Open
The Push & Pull Open consists of two max-rep movements: Seated Alternating Dumbbell Shoulder Presses followed by Pull-Ups on a continuously running clock.
Workout Rules
The athlete must start a clock counting up from 0:00 and keep the clock running for the entire event. The clock may not be stopped or reset.
Part 1 – Seated Alternating Dumbbell Shoulder Presses
- Men’s weight is 50 pound dumbbells, women’s weight is 30 pound dumbbells.
- The athlete will start a clock counting up from 0:00.
- The athlete will perform one set of maximum consecutive alternating dumbbell shoulder presses.
- Both dumbbells must begin on the athlete’s shoulders.
- The athlete must press one dumbbell overhead while keeping the opposite dumbbell at the shoulder.
- The athlete must lower the pressed dumbbell back to the shoulder before initiating the press with the opposite dumbbell.
- Each completed press counts as one rep.
- The arm must reach full extension and lockout at the top, with the bicep in line with the ear.
- Both feet must remain on the floor throughout the set.
- The dumbbell must be supported on the athlete’s shoulder with the handle parallel to the floor. The handle must remain horizontal and may not tilt forward or backward.
- Athletes may rest as needed with the dumbbells at the shoulders, but they may not set the dumbbells down and continue the set.
- The set ends when the athlete voluntarily stops or sets down the dumbbells.
- A rep will not count if the athlete drops or releases a dumbbell from overhead or from any position other than the hang position.
- The hang position is defined as the dumbbells being controlled back to the athlete’s sides with arms extended.
- The score is the total number of successful consecutive alternating reps completed.
Part 2 – Pull-Ups
- The clock continues running after Part 1. It must not be stopped or reset.
- The athlete must begin their pull-up set at or before 5:00 on the running clock.
- The athlete will perform one set of max consecutive pull-ups.
- Strict, butterfly, and kipping pull-ups are permitted.
- The athlete’s palms must face away from the athlete.
- Each rep begins with the arms fully extended at the bottom.
- The chin must clearly pass over the bar at the top of each rep.
- Hand protection is permitted.
- Athletes must perform pull-ups in one unbroken set. Once an athlete releases the pull-up bar and returns to the ground, the set is considered complete and may not be resumed.
- The score is the total number of successful consecutive pull-ups completed in the set.
Scoring
- Score is the sum of rankings for each workout. The winner will have the lowest combined rank.
- Tiebreaker goes to the athlete who performed the most shoulder presses.
Video Requirements
- For shoulder presses, camera angle must face the athlete straight on and visibly demonstrate the standards above.
- For pull-ups, camera angle must be facing the athlete either straight on or at a 45-degree angle and must be higher than ground level in order to clearly show the chin relative to the bar.
- The running clock must be visible for the entire workout and must clearly show that it started at 0:00 and continued counting upward without being stopped or reset.
- The video angle must clearly demonstrate that all movement standards are met.
- Athletes are responsible for self-timing their workout, either with an app (e.g., WETime, SmartWOD Timer, WOD Tracker) or by having a gym clock or iPad with a timer clearly visible throughout the workout.
