2023 Bonnyman Workout Open

The Bonnyman Workout has been added to the 2023 Open Series as the “power” competition. This workout combines a 1-rep max bench press and a 3-rep max deadlift (the heaviest weight competitors are able to lift off the ground to the level of the hips 3 times consecutively within the time limit). Score is the combined ranking for each lift.

Who is Bonnyman?

The Bonnyman Workout is named after Alexander “Sandy” Bonnyman, Jr. (1910-1943), a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. In the face of unrelenting enemy bombardment, Bonnyman directed the blowing of several hostile installations before the close of D-day and made a heroic stand to defend a strategic position before he was mortally wounded.

Registration for the Bonnyman Workout 2023 Open will open in December 2023. Registration is $5 per competitor in the Living Donor and Transplant Recipient categories and $50 per competitor in the General category. The registration deadline is January 11, 2023, and the competition will take place January 12 through January 18, 2023.

Workout Rules

To be considered for the podium and cash prizes, all competitors in the Bonnyman Workout 2023 Open must adhere to the following rules:

1-Rep Max Bench Press

  • Bench press must demonstrate a full range of motion in which the barbell must touch the athlete’s chest and a full extension and lockout at the elbow must occur at the top of the movement.
  • An athlete may not use a bounce from the barbell off of the chest.
  • The athlete’s glutes must touch the bench for the entirety of the exercise.
  • Athletes may have a spotter present while performing the bench press segment of the workout.
  • The spotter cannot assist with a lift-off and the spotter’s hands must remain clear from the barbell while the competitor is performing the movement.
  • The only assistance that the spotter can provide is lifting the bar if an athlete fails on a repetition.
  • Athletes may perform multiple attempts within the time cap.

3-Rep Max Deadlift

  • All three (3) reps must be completed within 10 seconds.
  • Athletes may perform multiple attempts within the time cap.
  • Weight must touch the ground after each repetition.
  • Athlete cannot rest on the bottom or top of the repetition.
  • Athlete may not bounce the weight to assist on their next rep.
  • Athlete must stand up straight at the end of each repetition.
  • A straight bar may be used as an alternative to a trap bar.
  • Athlete may not regrip the bar once they begin lifting.
  • Straps are not allowed.
  • Gloves and weight belts are encouraged.

For the workout

  • Workout must be completed as follows: bench press first, then deadlift.
  • Rank will be based off of the total of deadlift max weight plus bench press max weight.
    • Note this has leaderboard implications. If the first athlete gets 1st in one lift and 3rd in the second lift, their score is 4. If that is the lowest combined ranking, they are in 1st place.
    • If a second athlete is 2nd in the first event and 4th in the second event, their score is 6.
    • If 2 athletes are tied, the athlete with the higher bench press score wins.
  • Competitors must complete both deadlift and bench press components of the workout to be eligible for the leaderboard.
  • All videos must demonstrate weight being attempted for each exercise.
  • There is a three (3) minute time cap for the full workout.
