About John R. Fox

John Robert Fox, a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism on December 26, 1944. Acting as a forward observer with the 598th Field Artillery Battalion, Cannon Company, 366th Infantry, 92d Infantry Division, Lieutenant Fox directed artillery fire against overwhelming enemy forces in Sommocolonia, Italy, deliberately calling fire dangerously close to his own position. His selfless actions inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, delayed their advance, and exemplified the highest traditions of military service, at the cost of his own life.
