Athlete Profile: Kevin Kilkenny

Very few Donor Games athletes have been around since the very beginning of the Donor Games: Kevin Kilkenny is one of them. In fact, he himself may have been the inspiration for the event. Kevin met NKR and Donor Games Founder Garet Hil at physical therapy. Kevin had no idea Garet was involved with kidney donation and Garet had no idea Kevin was also a kidney donor. They became friends—very competitive friends. Kevin unsuccessfully tried to get Garet to join him in a Tough Mudder event, and the two eventually did a triathlon together. “He kicked my butt,” Kevin says. When COVID began, Kevin began sending Garet small at-home challenges, like doing 10 push-ups every minute for 60 minutes. Garet took the idea and ran with it, and the Donor Games was born. Kevin has competed in almost every Open competition.

Donor Story: Kevin donated a kidney directly to his sister in 2007. He was a six out of six antigen match with his sister. He was fully prepped for the procedure when there was an issue with his sister and they had to delay. He went back just after Memorial Day and this time the procedure went through as planned.

Personal: Kevin is married with two sons. He has a BS in sports medicine from Central Connecticut State University, where he played D1 soccer, club hockey, and club lacrosse. He owns his own physical therapy office, Generations Physical Therapy, and works as a certified athletic trainer with local high schools covering all sports activities. He has also worked with the New York Jets and the Harlem Globetrotters. He is also a lacrosse coach for his son’s travel lacrosse team. He is an avid mountain biker, skier, and “general gym guy.”
