Fran Workout 2023 Open Recap

The Fran Workout 2023 Open, a new workout for the Donor Games that took place March 15-21, delivered another exciting event, with fierce competition in both donor categories and a new name appearing at the top of the Donor Men’s leaderboard.

In the men’s donor category, Justin King was comfortably in first place with his second attempt of 6:32 after an initial DQ. Jason Elmore had three straight DQs before his fourth attempt of 6:20 bested Justin’s time and catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard. On the last day of the competition, Justin submitted a third attempt of 6:03 but it was DQ’d. Because Justin was DQ’d on the last day, according to the rules he had 24 hours to submit another attempt, and he did so, winning the category with a final time of 6:09. Cornelius Bornman, in only his second Donor Games appearance, took third place with a time of 7:16.

In the women’s donor category, it was another battle between Mimi Mahon and Roni Hays. Mimi submitted a 5:48 first effort, putting her in first place. On the last day of the competition, Roni beat Mimi’s time with a 5:28 effort, but just minutes later Mimi submitted a second effort of 5:14 putting her back on top. Darlene Magsino took the third-place spot with a time of 7:50.

Donor Games veteran Scott Claybrook took first place in the transplant recipient men’s division with a time of 9:18.

We had six world-class times in the general categories—these times were less than a minute off of the world record set by CrossFit Games veteran Noah Ohlsen (2nd Fittest in the World in 2019). Shelby Donahue (women’s division) crushed her first workout, beating all of the men in the general category, but was DQ’d due to a sub-optimal camera angle that did not capture her chin going over the pull-up bar. In her second attempt, to ensure her chin was over the bar, she converted to chest-to-bar pullups (much harder) and still completed the workout in a blazing time of 2:36, beating all but three men in the general category.
